Adaptogenic mushrooms are a category of mushrooms that have been traditionally used in Chinese medicine and other Eastern cultures due to their beneficial health properties for both preventing and treating various diseases, thanks to their high nutritional values and great sources of therapeutic compounds. Today, the integration of mushrooms has gained global popularity.
The potential medicinal complex of adaptogenic mushrooms is primarily based on different groups of bioactive compounds such as β-glucans, glycosides, terpenoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, tocopherols, carotenoids, among others; as well as micronutrients like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
Due to these bioactive compounds, they are attributed with medicinal properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anticancer, antihyperlipidemic, immunoregulatory, and cardioprotective properties, among others.
In recent years, some commonly identified mushroom species include: Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane mushroom), Cordyceps sinensis (caterpillar fungus), Ganoderma lingzhi (Reishi mushroom), Grifola frondosa (Maitake), Coriolus versicolor/Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail mushroom), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake mushroom), among others.
The functional qualities of mushrooms are determined by their bioactive compounds, which is why certain benefits are attributed to and associated with each mushroom:
Adaptogenic mushrooms are a natural treasure of bioactive compounds that offer a wide range of health benefits.
From strengthening the immune system to protecting the brain and heart, these mushrooms offer a holistic approach to wellness. Ongoing research is uncovering new properties and applications, consolidating their position as a valuable supplement for modern health.
