Post-COVID nutrients

Sol Martinez
Nutrientes post Covid
One of the necessary approaches to reducing the impact of COVID-19 on health is to take care of our diet and our lifestyle.

In addition to known protective measures, such as physical distancing, use of alcohol gel, and face masks, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is another measure that is becoming increasingly relevant every day, especially when we talk about prevention.

Nutrition plays a fundamental role, as it influences the quality of our immune system. Any nutritional imbalance will affect the competence of the system to some extent.

Foods in general, and nutrients in particular, play an important role in the development, preservation, and activation of immune function. Proteins, adequate fats, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals are related to the construction of the various components that form the immune barrier and its cellular turnover.

Certain vitamins, minerals, and trace elements have an essential role in maintaining immune function.

- Proteins: They play an important role in the synthesis of antibodies. Amino acid deficiency seriously affects this synthesis.

-Omega-3 fats: An essential fatty acid that our body cannot generate and must be provided externally, either through diet or as a food supplement. Fats are related to inflammation or anti-inflammation and have an impact on the immunomodulation of the organism.

-Vitamin C, E, and A, B1, B6, B9, B12 contribute to the cellular immune response, as do minerals such as copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium.

Vitamin D3: It is considered a pro-hormone that controls the production of antibodies by stimulating innate immunity, regulating the acquired immune system, and producing an anti-inflammatory effect. Low plasma concentration of this vitamin increases the risk of viral infections.

Prebiotics and Probiotics: Probiotics and prebiotics have modulating effects on immune activity, acting on the enteric immune system, which is related to the mucosa of the intestinal tract and contains 20% of the body's total lymphocytes.

Preserving the richness and functionality of our intestinal microbiota is considered a factor in reducing the risk of contracting COVID-19 or developing the disease in a severe form.
