Antioxidant capacity
Astaxanthin is a fat-soluble carotenoid studied for its antioxidant activity. A systematic review with meta-analysis in male athletes observed a significant increase in total antioxidant capacity (TAC) with its supplementation.
Skin: hydration and elasticity
A meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials on skin aging reported that oral supplementation was associated with significant improvements in skin moisture content and elasticity compared to a placebo. In the same analysis, the reduction in wrinkle depth did not reach statistical significance.
Visual function and accommodation
Various randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials conducted on people who work in front of screens have evaluated ocular accommodation function after astaxanthin use, observing improvements compared to the placebo group at standard doses of 6 mg per day.
Exercise and recovery
Evidence regarding athletic performance is nuanced: a recent systematic review concluded that the data does not support recommending it universally for improving maximum aerobic performance, suggesting its interest may primarily lie in contexts where recovery is relevant.
