In recent years, the supplement industry has undergone significant changes thanks to advanced technologies and innovative formats. In this article, we will explore two of the most important trends that are here to stay: liposomal technology and supplements in gel and spray formats. Both innovations offer improvements in absorption, bioavailability, and the consumption experience.
To understand what liposomal technology is, let's first think of a match: a small stick with a head that generates combustion when rubbed. Now, imagine that a phospholipid, one of the main fats in cell membranes, has a similar structure, but with the difference that two sticks come out of one head. The head has an affinity for water, while the sticks repel it.
This amphipathic structure (with polar and non-polar parts) allows phospholipids to form lipid bilayers, where hydrophilic heads are oriented toward the water and hydrophobic tails cluster inward. This makes cell membranes selective, allowing only what they truly need to pass through.
Since the 1964 discovery of the ability of phospholipids to form closed bilayers in aqueous systems, their use to improve the transport of substances has revolutionized medicine and now nutrition as well. Today, liposomes are used to deliver proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, among others.
Liposomes are small spherical compartments that separate one aqueous medium from another using a phospholipid bilayer. Inside, they store nutrients that can cross intestinal barriers and reach the cells that need them directly.
When we think of supplements, we usually think of pills, capsules, or powders. However, not everyone can or wants to consume them in that way.
At Ortomolecular Chile, we have combined liposomal technology with the gel and spray formats of NorVita, a brand recognized for its quality and European certifications.
Vitamin C is one of the best-known antioxidants. Among its functions:
Note: In liposomal gel format, vitamin C is up to 2 times more bioactive.
Dosage: Adults: 4 pumps per day. Children: 1 pump in the morning.
Magnesium participates in enzymatic reactions, as well as the transport and synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. It stabilizes enzymes, regulates muscle contraction, modulates insulin action, and is key for cell adhesion.
Despite its importance, its deficiency is often overlooked, although studies have linked it to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome and chronic diseases.
Vitamin B6, on the other hand, is essential for energy production and the functioning of the nervous and immune systems.
Note: Magnesium citrate in gel is absorbed 3 to 4 times faster than traditional sources.
Dosage: Adults: 3 pumps at night. Children: 1 pump at night.
